It’s Time to Landscape!
If you’ve been waiting to landscape your yard.. it’s time! Careful landscape planning can increase the enjoyment of your yard and add to the value of your home. Many homeowners begin landscaping without a plan. This haphazard approach rarely looks good or fits well with the family’s activities but still costs just as much, if not more, than a well-planned landscape.
Consider your landscape an outdoor extension of your home. Here are some things to look for:
- Be sure to look at the view from the windows in each room of your home.
- Walk around the property and note both good and bad features of your yard.
- Look for good views you wish to keep and the bad ones you want hidden.
- Examine how the sun and wind strike the house. Decide whether you wish to modify these.
- Look for ways to increase privacy in certain areas of your landscaping.
Once you have identifies the major features of your yard, you’ll want to get an idea of what plants you like. Here are some questions that will help you determine what you want:
- Are there particular flowers and shrubs that you already like?
- Are you planning to spend a lot of time gardening, or are you looking for a low-maintenance garden?
- Are there areas in your yard that are particularly sunny or shady?
- How will you water your plants?
- Are you in an area with a lot of wildlife? Rabbits and deer in particular?
Now you are ready to put your ideas on paper by making a plan.
